Looking for a dog for my 4 year old son

I'm looking for a dog for my 4-year-old son. We had a small Maltese but she has passed on. Now we are interested in finding a larger dog but my son is afraid of pitbulls so that is not an option. Preferably would like to find an indoor dog that would be comfortable sleeping in my son's bedroom because he wants a dog to sleep with him so he doesn't get scared at night. We are not interested in a dog with papers or for breeding purposes, we are interested in adding a family member. I would be willing to do a small rehoming fee. We do have an outdoor / indoor cat, so must be comfortable with cats. Also prefer a dog that doesn't jump on everybody. Thank you for your time.
