Pharmacology Update for The Advanced Practice Nurse: Evidence-Based Care in Treatments Chronic Pain and Women's Health Issues In primary settings, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) is in a prime position to treat and prescribe medications to patients suffering with acute and chronic pain. APRN’s are also often faced with knowing how to effectively treat patients with women’s health issues and treating prevalent transmittable infections. Because pain and women’s health issues represent commonly addressed complaints, APRN’s will be provided a comprehensive review on the updates of pharmacological treatment modalities for these patients. She also has experiences in urgent and acute care and internal medicine. Lori W. Gardiner, DNP, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC is an Assistant Professor at Nicholls State University College of Nursing. Jimmy Ponder Jr. MD is a board-certified physician and the medical director for the Headache and Pain Center. He specializes in providing non-opioid medications in pain relief. Shelly Matherne MSN, WHNP-BC- is a nursing instructor at Nicholls State University and is the course coordinator of Nursing and the Childbearing family. She continues to practice in her role as a women’s health provider in gynecology and obstetrics. Activity Learning Outcomes: 1. Recognize best practices in primary care when prescribing various narcotic and non-narcotic medications for pain management. 2. Identify the CDC guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain. 3. Differentiate the FDA-approved medications for opioid addiction, overdose, and withdrawal. 4. Evaluate the usefulness of determining Morphine Milligram Equivalents (MME) for commonly prescribed opioids. 5. Relate indications for targeted drug delivery infusion systems. 6. Compare various pharmacological nerve blocks and joint injections. 7. Distinguish various indications for gynecologic and reproductive medications. 8. Identify the conditions promoting the need for hormone replacement therapy for women.
