Du Bois - his life, his groundbreaking work and his ongoing influence on contemporary sociology W. E. B. Du Bois was one of the most important thinkers and public intellectuals of the first half of the 20th century and his work remains a powerful source for understanding our present. This talk will provide an overview of his life and work, highlighting some of his key insights and their relevance both during his life and now (addressing the current debates on Critical Race Theory). The lecture is funded in part by the Rhode Island Foundation. Presented in cooperation with Leadership Rhode Island. (exhibition photograph in featured graphic by Jared Winslow) José Itzigsohn is professor of Sociology and faculty fellow at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs. He received his PhD in sociology from the Johns Hopkins University (1995). He is the author of two books (Encountering American Faultlines and Developing Poverty) and numerous articles on migrant transnationalism, immigrant incorporation, ethnic and racial identities on the one hand, and informal economies, cooperatives, and the state on the other. He works within the world-system theoretical paradigm, but is interested in the local variations within the world economic and political systems. He investigates how local and regional institutional forms and identity formation processes develop and interact with world-systemic trends. The Sociology of W. E. B. Du Bois Racialized Modernity and the Global Color Line by José Itzigsohn and Karida L. Brown Published by: NYU Press The first comprehensive understanding of Du Bois for social scientists. The Sociology of W. E. B. Du Bois provides a comprehensive introduction to the founding father of American sociological thought. Du Bois is now recognized as a pioneer of American scientific sociology and as someone who made foundational contributions to the sociology of race and to urban and community sociology. However, in this authoritative volume, noted scholars José Itzigsohn and Karida L. Brown provide a groundbreaking account of Du Bois’s theoretical contribution to sociology, or what they call the analysis of “racialized modernity.” Further, they examine the implications of developing a Du Boisian sociology for the practice of the discipline today. "José Itzigsohn and Karida L. Brown have written a book that will stand out for a long time and be debated for years. The Sociology of W. E. B. Du Bois is a guidepost that enables the reader to absorb penetrating analyses of this great scholar pertaining to racism and lessons to address it. Seldom do we find analyses of an extremely complex thinker made crystal clear. This is such a work for anyone interested in a pivotal issue of our time." ~Aldon Morris, author of The Scholar Denied: W.E.B.
