Our names are Tom Mitt and Jake Polzin, and we're the founder and the president of TBG Technologies, an IT support company since 2004. The reason TBG Technologies exists is that we believe small companies are ignored. We are talking about really small businesses. Those with ten or fewer employees usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to technology support. They have the same goals as big corporations. They have the same technology issues. But they have a tough time getting good, reliable help. Before Going Mobile Not too long ago, everybody with an office job worked in an office. Your status could be determined by your workspace. If you worked in a cube, you were pretty average. Moving up, you'd get an office. If you were really special your office would be high up and in a corner. The computers in this typical small office were all orbiting a central server, usually a Windows server. It sat in a backroom, the coffee room, or in its own closet. It needed power, maintenance, backups, and all sorts of attention. And the users were forced to either be in the office to get their data or go through some major hoops if they were out on the road. Some offices still have this arrangement, but for the small businesses we at TBG Technologies work with, this is much less common. We believe this office transformation is occurring much faster in the very small business world. It makes a lot of sense. A small business with 2, 3 or 5 staff has to be more nimble. One of the team members is going to be out selling, one is producing, and one is managing the office. Could be a few more or a few less, but this is what I am seeing more and more often. The Creation of a Mobile Workforce Now what we are experiencing is a truly mobile workforce. Email – the lifeblood of any business – is hosted and managed in some unknown location in a large, well-protected data center. That server sitting in the back room is gone, replaced by data stored up in the "Cloud," accessible from anywhere in the world with a decent internet connection. And instead of the $5,000-$10,000 investment in equipment and maintenance that was required, a much lower monthly subscription of maybe a few hundred dollars is all that is needed. Two firms have really driven this change: Google and Microsoft, each competing against each other. Google's G-Suite includes all of the functions an office may need from word processing, to file storage, spreadsheets, and email. Microsoft's Office 365 product does that and keeps adding more functions without adding to the cost. At TBG, we have focused on Microsoft's Office 365 product, mostly because it is an extension of the ubiquitous Office Suite that just about every business already uses. Choosing the Best Products for Your Mobile Workforce We confess a bias towards Microsoft. The availability and reliability have been outstanding. But most of all, it is an easy transition for the companies we work with. We have really been working to move companies completely up into the cloud, using SharePoint (part of the Office 365 package) as a file storage and backup location. Are you already using Office 365? Then chances are you have a huge amount of high-quality storage available to you. And it can be shared with your whole team. How about letting your customers schedule meetings with your sales staff themselves at a date and time that works best for them? It's there. Because it can be configured as an extension of tools your team is already familiar with, the Office 365 suite is a natural choice for a small 1-20 user company. TBG Technologies can make this work for your business, too! In the coming weeks, we'll be posting additional educational information so you're able to become the best business owner you can be. We'll touch on backups, anti-virus, internet safety, cyber-attacks, ransomware, the cloud, email safety, and others.
