Man Gets 37 Years To Life In Prison For 2018 Nassau Murder

HEMPSTEAD, NY — A Hempstead man was sentenced to 37 years to life in prison on Friday for the 2018 murder of a man in the village. Jamik Cannon, 28, was convicted on May 14 of second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. "This defendant and his accomplice turned a residential street in Hempstead into a killing field at 11 o'clock on a Friday morning," said Acting Nassau County District Attorney Joyce Smith. "Fifteen gunshots over a petty argument took Demetrius Winfield's life, nearly killed his friend, and terrorized the Hempstead community. We will continue to vigorously prosecute gun violence and its aftermath to the fullest extent of the law." According to Smith, at 10:54 a.m. on Oct. 19, 2018, Demetrius Winfield was on a break from his job at a home on Wellesley Street in Hempstead and was talking to a friend. The two were shot by Cannon and his accomplice, Brian Marshall-Gibson. The two fired at least 15 shots in 14 seconds. Winfield was shot in the face, chest and groin and was pronounced dead at Winthrop Hospital. The second victim, who authorities have not named, was also shot, but survived, and is recovering from his injuries. Cannon and Winfield knew each other and had gotten into an argument three days prior at a gas station. Cannon and Marshall-Gibson were arrested by the Nassau County Police Department on Dec. 11, 2018. Marshall-Gibson pleaded guilty on April 29, 2020 to second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was sentenced on Aug. 24, 2020 to 20 years to life in prison.
