GBA+Monmade Present: Artisanal Products & Sustainability – Roundhouse Tour

This event is part of a series of tours hosted by GBA & Monmade to highlight artisanal products in green buildings. Join us for one or all! The Roundhouse is the most recently completed project on the Hazelwood Green development and is an incredibly unique example of existing building reuse. Hazelwood Green itself is a major brownfield redevelopment with implications for the future of development in the Greater Pittsburgh region. In its pursuit of the LEED for Neighborhood Development certification, the site has impactful sustainability goals not only for individual buildings, but also for elements including connectivity, transportation, and large-scale energy and water use. The 10-bay Roundhouse and turntable was built in the late 1800s and was used to stabilize train engines for servicing and to redirect the materials they carried. The project team tasked with renovating the property had to stabilize the structure, parts of which were collapsing. The newly renovated property is pursuing LEED Gold certification and incorporated energy efficient systems for heating and cooling. Locally made products were incorporated into the Roundhouse with the requirement that materials met VOC thresholds and were responsibly sourced. This includes water based ecofriendly finishes, FSC certified wood, and pairing producers with regional manufacturing partners. The tour will include comments by the building’s anchor tenant, OneValley; project team members; and Monmade. Monmade’s network of artisan producers created specialized products for the space. See a variety of newly developed products including wallcoverings that speak to Pittsburgh’s diverse neighborhoods, trash cans that pay tribute to the heritage of the building, locally made LED lighting, and other environmentally friendly furnishings.
