Creating Urban Design Strategies For Declining Malls And Strip Shopping Centers
Ellen Dunham-Jones will share her work around how existing suburban developments, such as aging malls and office parks, can be successfully retrofitted into public spaces, apartments and affordable housing to create a healthier, more sustainable city.
She is the author of Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs and Director of the Master of Science in Urban Design program at Georgia Tech.
Ellen is a leading authority on sustainable urban redevelopment. In her teaching and research, she focuses on helping communities address challenges that extend outside of what cities were initially designed for, including improving public health, supporting and aging society, and increasing resilience facing climate change.
Ellen received both her A.B. in Architecture and Planning and Master or Architecture from Princeton University. Before joining Georgia Tech as Architecture Program Director, she also taught at UVA and MIT. In addition to serving on several national boards and committees, Ellen also formerly served as Chair of the Board on the Congress for New Urbanism.
In addition to authoring over 100 articles, she is also author of Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia: Urban Design Strategies for Urgent Challenges, which expands on ideas presented in the first book.
