Press release from Shreve Memorial Library: July 26, 2021 As students in Caddo Parish get ready to head back to the classroom, Shreve Memorial Library's new STEM program, Leap into Science, is preparing students in science and math. In-person programs are happening on the campuses of Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout the parish. The programs will run through the fall, with programs continuing in August and September. On Monday, August 2, the David Raines Branch invites children and their families to join in exploring the science of light and shadow with a hands-on outdoor program. The program will take place outside in the parking lot of the branch at 10:00 a.m. The branch is located at 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. Families are also invited to come and explore the characteristics of light and shadow by listening to a story, recreating shadow shapes, and designing shadow shapes of their own. This program takes place on Friday, August 13 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m., at the Hosston Branch, located at 15478 U.S. Highway 71 in Hosston. In September, the Belcher-Wyche Branch hosts Leap into Science: Light and Shadow on Tuesday, September 14 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Participants will explore the science behind shadows and light during this hands on program using various tools at two workstations.  Attendees will discuss shadows and light at the shadow station and see how materials of different transparencies affect shadow creation. At the light table, a discussion on how light creates color, using transparent sheets to mix colors, will take place.  The Belcher-Wyche Branch is located at 409 Charles Street in Belcher. Leap into Science is a nationwide program developed by The Franklin Institute Science Museum, integrating open-ended science activities with children's books. The program is free, and targets children ages 3 to 10 years of age and their families.  Leap into Science makes science and reading fun for children and their families. Participants explore the science of light and shadow, learning what light is and why we see shadows. This press release was produced by Shreve Memorial Library.
