CALIFORNIA, CA — Three in four Californians 12 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. The same is true for 77 percent of adults, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Monday. The governor urged Californians to get vaccinated as the Golden State continued to experience an uptick in COVID-19 cases attributed to the circulation of the highly transmissible delta variant. Unvaccinated people have been most affected by the recent surge, and the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention called COVID-19 "a pandemic of the unvaccinated." "Protect yourself," Newsom said on Twitter. "Protect your loved ones." The number of new cases detected here is far below what California experienced over the holiday season — the height of the pandemic — but the case rate has significantly increased this month. California saw an average of 11 cases per 100,000 people over the past week. That's up from about three cases per 100,000 people a month ago. Hospitalizations have also increased. More than 3,000 Californians were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Monday, including 700 in the intensive care unit. In all, California has seen 3.8 million COVID-19 cases and 64,000 deaths.
