Good morning, River City! Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Tuesday July 27th, 2021! First, today's weather: Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 93 Low: 67. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: Effective July 1, 2021 the allowable rent increase in Sacramento jumped from 6% to 9%. This rise was calculated based on the formula in the Sacramento Tenant Protection and Relief Act. That language says that the maximum annual rent increases are based on 5% plus changes in the Consumer Price Index. The CPI jumped to 4% so the maximum increases are now 9%. The relief act also imposes a 1 year period where tenants can be evicted without cause. City councilmembers are discussing both of those provisions as tenants emerge from COVID into a very hot housing market. (SN&R) Sacramento native LeVar Burton recently tried his hand as host of Jeopardy. And, according to the Reading Rainbow actor, it was "scary. Really, really, really scary." After a petition backing him as host garnered over 250,000 signatures, he was given his chance. Will he be devastated if he doesn't get the gig? "No. I mean, it will hurt; I'll be disappointed. And I'll be fine, because what I know about my life is that which is supposed to be for me comes my way," he said. (ABC10)Governor Newsom was in Alameda County on Monday to promote COVID vaccinations. As part of that address the governor also announced that all California State government workers and healthcare providers would be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccinations or be subject to weekly testing. Officials announced Monday that the new rules will take effect next month. (ABC10) It's a sad story all the way around as a developmentally disabled man was sentenced to 4 years in state prison for a hit and run accident in front of the Sacramento Amtrak station last year. Jordan Ware was driving a truck for work when he struck and killed a 51-year-old man and then fled the scene. The judge concurred that the situation was tragic, both for the victim and for the developmentally disabled defendant. Due to the actions of the defendant and his family after the crime, the judge denied probation and instead sentenced Jordan to the minimum required prison time. (The People's Vanguard of Davis)Sacramento native Cameron Champ putted his way to a 5-under 66 on Sunday and won the 3M Open by 2 strokes for his third career victory. The 26 year-old grew up in North Highlands. With this victory, Champ jumped from 142nd to 49th in the FedEx Cup standings with three events to go before the playoffs.
