Phone Scam Reported In Hoover: Police

HOOVER, AL — Multiple Hoover residents have complained to police about a phone scam circulating within the community. The scam involves a caller claiming the victim has outstanding warrants. "The scam involves the caller saying that you possibly have pending criminal charges and/or a warrant for your arrest," Hoover police said in a statement Monday. "They will try to scare you and obtain personal information, or otherwise send them payment over the phone to 'take care of' the warrant." The Hoover Police Department said they will never conduct that type of business over the phone, and that citizens should never comply with these types of calls. The Hoover PD recommends: • Simply hang up. (if they give you a call back number, do not call it back) • Never give personal information (even your phone number) to a stranger over the phone (on received calls). • Never send money, gift card information, iTunes card information, or any other type of payment to a stranger over the phone. • If you have questions about the call, hang up. Then, call a family member or trusted friend to get a second opinion. You can also call Hoover PD Dispatch non-emergency at 205-822-5300. "If the caller says you have a warrant, hang up," the Hoover PD said. "Then, you contact that agency directly to verify."
