Attorney help with Name Change that was never Filed

HELP!! 26 years ago, lived in NJ and paid an attorney to change my then 6 yr olds childs name. Attorney said it was done and gave me paperwork to use for anything as my child grew. Ordered a new ss card, permit, everything. My child is a grown person and has used that paperwork and name his whole life, he even got his permit and dl with it some years back. Now its time to renew his dl and get the gold star on it, we were told we would need the original paperwork with raised seal from NJ. After contacting NJ and doing alot of digging, turns out his name change was never filed and is not legal. Now we are trying to fix this and make it legal. DMV wont renew his license so thats going to cause issues in many ways but this whole situation is kinda screwed up. So if there is an attorney that is able to help, please contact me. Money is tight but at the same time, we need to get this corrected. TIA
