Beware Backyard Breeders

Description
This teeny tiny 1.4 pound puppy was surrendered to us this evening on deaths bed, but of course we took her. Someone had adopted her from a backyard breeder they were told she was eight weeks old and they had already had her three weeks. While at the emergency vet this evening they thought she was maybe maximum of five weeks old so likely when they adopted this puppy she was only 2 to 3 weeks old and had been feeding her Walmart puppy kibble. She had been suffering for the last week rapidly declining, but because of what she cost they didn’t want to give her up. She had a heart murmur grade 5 of 6 and was likely born with some sort of congenital heart defect. She suffered to breathe, couldn’t eat and wasn’t taken care of. This little puppy deserved more and a chance at possible survival. But unfortunately at VCA tonight an hour after surrender she did have to be euthanized and was already in full on heart failure. If you plan to adopt a puppy no matter how much you’re paying for it or where it’s coming from you need to know what you’re signing up for. It’s not just basic expenses like food, shots and a cute fluffy bed. A simple emergency room visit could cost you easily $3000 in your first week of owning. You have to be prepared for these type of expenses otherwise you should not be adopting a puppy. Unfortunately, this is our harsh reality every day. At least once per day someone reaches out trying to surrender a dog that they had already committed to for life. That commitment went out the window when life change such as having a baby, moving, new job, but for some reason it’s easier to wash your hands and hope someone else will pick up the pieces. Rescue never stops it’s 24/7 and it will take every little piece of your soul with. We just want to remind everyone we only do this for the dogs and cats, no one is paid, we volunteer our heart and souls into this and need the community to educate about spay and neuter and the bigger picture dogs are dying! This is why I always say adopt dont shop. Shared from Animal Rescue of Tracy and Underdog Animal Rescue.
