For those working with or living with persons with dementia, going “back to their story” can be vital in how we approach their care. "Back to the Story" Trauma in Dementia PatientsTrainer: Kristy Matheson, LSW In her 22 years as a Social Worker, Kristy has positioned herself as an advocate and resource for families and professionals. Kristy is a Certified Dementia Practitioner, and is a State of Ohio Social Work Provider for Continuing Professional Education. She has written and trained seminars on topics related to the health care industry. For the past 11 years, Kristy has worked in hospice care, and is now employed by Affinity Care of Ohio as a Community Liaison. Audience: Social workers, hospice workers, nursing home staff, caregivers, church ministries CEUs available: 2.75 For those working with or living with persons with dementia, going “back to their story” can be vital in how we approach their care. This interactive and informative workshop will describe how early trauma may manifest as behavior in persons with dementia. We will examine how trauma impacts the nervous system, and how trauma such as abuse, neglect, and abandonment impacts family systems. We will discuss how this relates to family caregiving relationships. Finally, we will explore the Validation Method, and its effectiveness in caring for those affected by dementia.
