Description

Cedaredge High School Student, Mary Locke, speaks about the history of schools in the Surface Creek Valley, and the teachers who taught The first school in the SCV opened near Eckert in 1884 by Captain William Spaulding. But soon small one-room school houses dotted the valley. Schools needed to be walking distance from the farms the children lived on, because remember there were no automobiles here at that time. The Sand Creek Schoolhouse at Pioneer Town is a good example of schools from this time. This school was built near the Wenton Coal Mine in Coalby. When the building was no longer needed as a schoolhouse, it was converted into a home. Melanie Wetterich Grant started her teaching career at Sand Creek.
