Here are the top four stories in Laurel today: A person has died after a Saturday afternoon shooting in Laurel. The shooting happened in the 13300 block of Laurel Bowie Rd. (WJLA)Three athletes from Prince George's County are competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Tennis player Frances Tiafoe, NBA players Kevin Durant and Jerami Grant are all from this county. On Friday, friends, family and community members gathered in College Park to wish them good luck with a pep rally. Leading the cheers of "Prince George's proud" were Durant's mother, Wanda, and one of Tiafoe's coaches. (WTOP)An organization that helps create safe places for homeless children to socialize has expanded its reach into Maryland for the first time. The Homeless Children's Playtime Project partners with area homeless shelters and transitional housing programs to provide a place for children experiencing housing insecurity to socialize, play and learn. Moe and the City of Laurel have been awarded $30K in funding from the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board for a roadway safety audit on Bowie Road, which connects US 1 to MD 197 in the City of Laurel. The audit will examine roadway safety and traffic signal effectiveness to mitigate hazards for all road users.
