Good morning, River City! Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Monday July 26th, 2021! First, today's weather: A break in the weather and in the smoke. Nice! Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 88 Low: 64. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: It's almost time for back to school, but some districts still need resources. The San Juan School district is looking for teachers, aides and trades workers for its upcoming school year and is willing to put their money where their mouth is, offering a $2K signing bonus. School district officials say that one up side to the pandemic is seeing more parents signing up to help in the classrooms. They believe it's because parents have become more confident and skilled in education due to the need to homeschool during the COVID outbreak. (CBS Sacramento)Oops! One Sacramento driver mistook a construction zone for an offramp at Sutterville and was trapped inside their car for 4 hours before authorities got them out. CHP says the driver got their car stuck between a temporary barrier and a sound wall. Ultimately a tow truck helped un-wedge the car. The driver was uninjured... well, other than their ego. (FOX40)If you're hoping that your cloth mask will help with the bad air quality from the nearby wildfires, you're going to be disappointed. The CDC says that cloth masks offer no protection from the smoke particulates. "When you're looking at wildfire smoke you're looking at really really tiny particles that will easily pass through those cloth masks," explained Dr. Vanessa Walker, a specialist in both pulmonary and critical care. COVID particles are very small, but they are suspended in droplets, so masks can offer some protection. (KCRA3)Sacramento police are still investigating the death of a woman found deceased inside her apartment in South Land Park on Friday night. Neighbors say they saw the woman often, and there were some signs that not everything was as it should be in the home. A 17-year-old suspect has been arrested. (CBS Sacramento & FOX40)Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation are searching for 25-year-old Edgar Benitez after he walked away from a minimum security prison firefighting camp in El Dorado County Saturday night. Anyone who sees Benitez, should call 911 or contact law enforcement immediately. (FOX40) Monday's events in Sacramento The last Monday of the month is family day at Flatstick Pub! Bring all of your fam for a great day of mini-golf and Duffleboard. This is the only day each month that patrons under 21 are allowed in Flatstick, so bring those kids and dazzle them with the golfing fun! (12 noon)Try out Zumba from the comfort of your own home. Always wanted to try exercise to a Latin beat but were afraid your two left feet would put you out of sync with the rest of the class? No one will know if you give it a try virtually! Join the Rio Linda Library for Zumba on Zoom. (5:30 pm)Tune in to Comedy Spot's livestream of the Top 10 List, where guests are asked to come up with a top 10 list on a new subject. Viewers may be asked to participate! Event is free but donations are appreciated. (6 pm)Learn Chicago Style Steppin at this Steppin For Beginners class. No partner is needed. Class is $5 at the door. (6 pm) Sacramento Patch Notebook Does summer seem like bike riding season to you? How about railbikes!?! Yup. You and a friend can ride the rails on your very own railbike at the River Fox Train depot. Or, if you're more inclined to sit and sip, there's an old vine express or a beer train where the conductor will do the work for you. Enjoy the Sacramento River on the rails your way! Or, maybe when you think summer you think beautiful, ripe fruit. Well, Sacramento has you covered there, too. Try out this authentic, unique Michoacan specialty, gaspacho at Gaspachos! It's not the cold tomato soup you may be thinking about when you hear that term. This homophone is a cup of mango, pineapple and jicama chunks covered in orange juice and topped with queso fresco and your choice of chili powder. YUM! They have other fruity treats, as well. Check them out! From our sponsors — thanks for supporting local news!
