Most vets and shelters will scan the pet free to see if he has a microchip.
Many newspapers run Found ads free so check with the newspapers in your area.
There is a Facebook page with Lost & Found posts, Maine Lost Cat Recovery.
If you can get a breakaway collar with your contact information on it you should hear from the owner within a few days. There are sites that have instrucions on making one from paper. You can do a search for it.
Copy your post to Nextdoor.com if you are on that site.
If the owner can’t be found and you can’t keep him, one of the rescue groups or shelters will help find him a home. It is far kinder than leaving him outside.
