Description
LYRIC is an organization composed of passionate attorney and law student volunteers donating their time to empower Colorado youth. “LYRIC’s student workshops are equipment for survival. Students, teachers and parents know that any encounter with law enforcement can have life-altering consequences for youth, especially immigrant youth and youth of color. LYRIC workshops are taught by juvenile defense lawyers who want to make sure youth know how to advocate for themselves, avoid having their rights violated, and be safe in any interactions with law enforcement.” Daniel KimPhD Director of Youth Organizing and Padres & Jóvenes Unidos What is LYRIC? LYRIC was founded in 2009 as Hannah Seigel Proff and Michael Juba were beginning their careers as Colorado State Public Defenders. Ms. Proff and Mr. Juba became frustrated by how many of their juvenile clients didn’t understand their constitutional rights during police contacts. As Public Defenders, they were teaching young people their rights after they became involved in the criminal justice system- and therefore, often after it was too late for them to exercise those rights. Ms. Proff and Mr. Juba were eager to connect with and educate Denver’s youth before they entered the juvenile justice system. Their goal was to empower young people to exercise those rights when it mattered most and hopefully avoid entering the criminal justice system at all. LYRIC programming aims to bring Constitutional Law to life for juveniles in schools, juvenile justice facilities, and community settings. LYRIC aims to not only teach youth about their constitutional rights, but also enable young people to become active and knowledgeable citizens who feel empowered to exercise their rights if they are contacted by the police.LYRIC has grown to an organization with over fifty active volunteers. LYRIC is available to teach Know Your Rights presentations across the Denver metro area, Boulder County, Colorado Springs and Northern Colorado.
