First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 95 Low: 59. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: An aggressive fire season and staffing shortages are leaving the Sacramento Fire Department in a tight spot. The problem is starting to affect response times. Early retirements, vacations, and delays in training due to COVID protocols are all factors in low staffing across the department. To compensate, the Department will host a special accelerated fall hiring session. The plan is to hire 15 new firefighters with prior experience. Their training will be abbreviated from 22 weeks to 10, allowing firefighters to start working in December. (CBS Sacramento)Smoke from the California wildfires is starting to move into Sacramento Valley. The smoke in the Valley prompted the Folsom Fire Department to send out a tweet Friday afternoon that there were currently "no active fires in Folsom." Officials recommend that people stay indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. The air is expected to thin over the weekend and the air quality will improve. (KCRA3) If you want to enjoy get your blues on at the Torch Club, you'll have to show proof of vaccination before you can enter. Owner Marina Texeira believes her customers will appreciate knowing that others in her indoor establishment who are talking, dancing and singing are fully vaccinated. (Capital Public Radio) Park rangers at Folsom Lake are warning people that they could face fines of up to $250K if they remove artifacts from the emerging lakebed. With water levels at historic lows, the lakebed that was once a settlement for gold mining and farming is starting to re-emerge and with it artifacts from the era are being exposed. Leave them there for other people to marvel over! Both Federal and State laws protect those artifacts. (CBS Sacramento)A man was caught driving a car with a police-style light bar on top. When police stopped him he identified himself as a federal law enforcement officer with a badge around his neck. Elk Grove Police determined he was not, and he was arrested for impersonating an officer. Authorities advise that if you are stopped by an unmarked vehicle and you are not sure if it is an officer, activate your hazards, look for a well lit place to pull over and call 911 to confirm. (ABC10) Sunday's events in Sacramento It's a beautiful day for a bike ride! Take this class to learn where, when and how to ride safely, and learn the ins and outs of fixing your bike. Then, take a ride with the Bike Lab team. (9 am)Take a little time for yourself with Self Care Sunday in the park. There will be a 30 minute yoga session as well as massages, henna tattoos and more. And you can add bottomless mimosas for an extra charge. (10:30 am)Participate in a food fight! A street food fight, to be exact, at Jackrabbit Brewing, where three competitors vie for your vote. Your ticket gets you nine bites, beer pairing and a token to vote for your favorite vendor. (11 am)Are you a fan of shabby chic or French provincial? Chalk painting may be for you! You can try out at least five different chalk paint techniques at this workshop. Everything you need will be provided! (12 noon)It's ladies night at The Summer of Laughs comedy series at The Summer Moon. You can begin your evening with a makers market where you can purchase local handcrafts. Then, settle in for a comedy show featuring local ladies of comedy. 18+ (8 pm) Sacramento Patch Notebook It's all fun and games in the Sacramento foothills, until somebody finds a Jerusalem cricket!
