There really hasn't been any sort of shift. When you say democrat... that's part of the socialist platform. Socialism includes Marxism, Communism, Democratic Socialism, Fascism, Leninism, Maoism, and a host of others. The party hasn't shifted it's philosophy, it just uses a different name or title depending on the current climate. For example, Bernie Sanders is a socialist. That didn't ring well with the voters in American. So they renamed it to Democratic Socialism. That sounded better and the democrats tried to say how different it was than the other socialist titles like communism, etc. But again, the voters see thru that and people see that it's just another version of Marxism or Fascism or communism. The GOP is pushing the 'Marxist' title because it sounds worse that the other possible choices.
