How to Love Homeschooling When You Hate It by Angel Lambert When you began your homeschool journey, did you have visions of couch cuddles surrounded by piles of lovingly read books? Walks through your neighborhood looking at birds and flowers and clouds? Children who were so excited they didn't have to attend a formal school, willingly doing math pages and answering science questions and writing history facts? Were all these hopes dashed when your kids woke up grumpy and you had a headache and the baby was hungry all day? Did you start homeschool in a bind, feeling forced to bring your kids home because the school buildings were all closed and Zoom wasn't working? Well... we can help! Come to this session to hear encouragement for your tired mama heart. You will leave refreshed with tips to help calm the storms in your home. Pushing Back by Robin Helzer Stop rushing your young children into “school.” You don’t have to follow the world, but you can push back. Push back the rush to learning to read, to writing, to being like everyone else. We will discuss the research concerning early learning and how we can adjust our thinking in our homeschools. Embrace pushing back! Holding Hands with God: Creating a 4 Year High School Master Plan by Rebecca Fairbairn Bring your ideas and enthusiasm as we work together to pencil-in your child's High School Master Plan. Becky will be leading you through how to include God in your high school planning, the law regarding homeschooling high schoolers, and how to map out your high school curriculum. We will also touch briefly on designing Transcripts and writing Course Descriptions. This session will be most relevant to those with kids aged 12+, but all are welcome. Session Two Music Is For Everyone by Zoe and Heather Underhill Teaching your children music can be more than just checking off a homeschool requirement. Music has an incredible effect on our brains and our health. We will share with you fun & simple ways to weave music into your home so your children can reap the many benefits that music brings to them. Help, Lord! I’ve Messed Everything Up! by Debbie Gibson We can find peace, even in our mistakes. All is not lost, even on our worst days. God is still sovereign! Hitting the Mark: Planning Your Year With the End in Mind by Rebecca Fairbairn “If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time.” - Zig Ziglar, a famous American motivational speaker. What should we be aiming at as we plan our homeschool year? How do we plan our year so that our most important goals are hit? Becky will present the goal setting process and give hints and tips of how to achieve those goals. Included in this talk will be how to prepare for an end of year Portfolio Assessment. This session is appropriate for all parents. The Low Cost, No Cost Homeschool by Robin Helzer I can’t afford to homeschool! Yes, you can! You absolutely can homeschool on very little monetary investment. We will discuss how to homeschool with very little money and the resources readily available to you. Speakers: Debbie Gibson & Dan, her husband of 36 years, have been homeschooling their 9 children since 1993. 8 are now graduated; the last is beginning his final year. Debbie & Dan have served on the CHEO Leadership Team since 2014, first as Regional Representatives for the Northeast Ohio region, and since 2016, as members of the Board of Directors of the statewide, non-profit organization. Debbie has traveled around the state of Ohio for the past few years, offering Getting Started workshops to families who are new to, or just considering, home education, and last year even offered some sessions via Zoom! She is the administrator for the Christian Home Educators of Ohio (CHEO) Facebook group, as well as the Cuyahoga County Christian Home Educators Facebook group, and also co-leads a homeschooling parents’ support group in Cuyahoga County. In addition to encouraging families in their homeschooling adventure, Debbie enjoys spending time with her family (which also includes 9 grandchildren) and her church family. Rebecca Fairbairn My husband and I have been homeschooling since our first child entered the world in 1995. We have 4 children: 3 are homeschool graduates, and 1 is finishing high schooling at home. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I am licensed to teach elementary and gifted students in the state of Ohio. I have been performing homeschool assessments and curriculum consultations for almost 30 years. I enjoy using my background and experience to assist others on their homeschooling journeys. Robin Helzer has been a part of the homeschooling community since 1998 and has graduated her two children. As a licensed educator, she has been helping homeschool families with portfolio reviews for more than 20 years and teaching on the relaxed homeschooling lifestyle. She believes that there is freedom in this choice and wants to help others discover that for themselves. She can be reached at [email protected] Heather Underhill Heather & Jonathan recently celebrated 22 years of marriage. By God's grace, home education has been a part of our lives for the past 19 years. Heather launched Christian Homeschool Community Connection ten years ago because early on in her journey she saw the value and necessity of connecting with other home educating families for advice, encouragement, and most of all love. Team Underhill reside in Elyria with their 3 children: Noah 18, Zoe 17, and Selah 15. Heather has two joy jobs. Heather is a stylist with Ruby Ribbon and a Playologist with SimplyFun. If you would like any information about Ruby Ribbon (wirefree, bra replacements) or SimplyFun (family and educational board and card games) send Heather a text to ask for more information to 440-975-7478. Zoe Underhill Zoe will be a senior in high school this fall. Zoe has been playing the piano since she was three-and-a-half and has been singing with the Oberlin Choristers since she was five. She has also been in three theatre productions, two of which were musicals. Zoe is planning on going to college for a Bachelors in Music Education. In January, Zoe started her teaching journey by teaching her cousins music and then piano lessons in May. A few weeks ago, she opened up her music studio and now has 20 students and counting! She loves music and kids, so she is super excited to start this music teaching journey. She wants everyone to have the same great experience with music that she was blessed to have. She wants kids (and adults too!) to have fun with music and find their love for music like she has. Some fun facts about Zoe are that she enjoys organizing her things, her family, and her life. She loves planning too! Zoe has been loving a makeup company called Seint for over a year now and plans to become a Seint artist when she turns 18. Zoe loves talking, so much in fact, that she has a podcast with her brother Noah that he started at the beginning of quarantine. You can find her singing and listening to music all the time!
