Writing Where We Are: JLF Colorado Free Writing Class with Master Writer Suzi Q. Smith Award winning, master writer Suzi Q. Smith teaches Writing Where We AreIn this generative workshop, we will stoke our imaginations and lean into our observations by considering our environment, our senses, and the ways they inform our understanding of ourselves and the places that shape us. Participants will collaborate to create word banks, and there will be an opportunity to share for those who are so inclined. Suzi Q. Smith is an artist, activist, and educator who hails from Denver, Colorado. She holds a degree in English writing from the University of Colorado at Denver, and she has been performing poetry throughout the United States for over a decade. Her poems have appeared in Union Station Magazine, Suspect Press, La Palabra, Muzzle Magazine, Malpais Review, The Pedestal, The Los Angeles Journal, Denver Syntax, Word is Bond, The Peralta Press, and in the anthologies, Diverse-City, His Rib: Anthology of Women, and In Our Own Words. Her collection of poems, A Gospel of Bones, was published by Alternating Current Press in 2021, and you can pre-order Poems for the End of the World at https://suziqsmith.com/Suzi Q. has also worked extensively as an activist with civil rights organizations, victims advocate organizations, arts organizations, peace organizations, hospitals, prisons, and more. She was the founding Slammaster of Denver’s Slam Nuba, and she spent 12 years in the poetry slam arena as a coach, organizer, and performer. In addition, she has worked extensively with youth, serving as a Teaching Artist with Youth On Record, and as a coach of Denver Minor Disturbance Youth Poetry Slam, resulting in two international championships. Currently, Suzi Q. is at work on her next collection while she continues to teach Creative Writing.
