In Deep Red, jazz pianist Marcus Daly (David Hemmings, Blow Out) witnesses the murder of psychic Helga Ullman (Macha Meril). With the help of an intrepid reporter (Daria Nicolodi), he tries to identify the killer before becoming a victim himself. Often considered the peak of the giallo genre, Deep Red features Argento’s the first film scoring collaboration with the prog-rock band Goblin and memorable murder set pieces. Argento’s directorial debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage follows American writer Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante) who witness an attempted murder in an Italian art gallery. Argento’s film codified the tropes of the burgeoning giallo genre, including black gloved killers, and launched many imitators.
