Date: August 10, 2021 * Venue: 4700 Bohannon Drive Menlo Park, CA 94025-(HC) Pediatric Patient Teaching on Diabetes COURSE DESCRIPTION Diabetes is a complex disease. Knowledge about the pathophysiology, awareness of symptoms, treatment and management are necessary to safely care for these patients as well as provide education to the patient and family. COURSE OBJECTIVES The learner will gain an increased understanding of the following concepts: The pathophysiology of diabetesThe difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetesRecognizing the signs and symptoms of diabetesUnderstanding the pathophysiology of diabetic ketoacidosis and its managementComprehension of diabetic diet and carbohydrate counting as they relate to insulin calculation and administrationImportance or educating parents/guardians in how to teach their child about diabetes care (e.g., administration of SQ injections, teaching aides such as the Pink Panther book)"Stackin" insulin doses and the importance of patient history and diet/carbohydrate counting CONTINUING EDUCATION This continuing education (CE) course is approved for 5 contact hours by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Contact hours awarded for full program attendance only. Partial credit will not be given for partial attendance. This course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI).
