A celebration of the 95th birthday of John Coltrane, featuring his most lyrical and romantic music.
John Coltrane (1926-1967) was a giant of 20th century American music. He has remained a popular and hugely influential figure, revered and studied and imitated, even more than 50 years after his untimely death. His legacy has been preserved through his recorded collaborations with other jazz giants (Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Theolonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie) as well as his many recordings as leader of the John Coltrane Quartet. Coltrane’s influence is especially remarkable because of its extraordinary breadth, with classic recordings of blues, Broadway standards, bebop tunes, original compositions, and futuristic avant-garde explorations.
Mixed in, throughout the many developmental stages of his career, are dozens of tender, lyrical ballads, exhibiting a very gentle side to his music and character. Two of his most notable, and enduringly popular, recordings are his IMPULSE albums Ballads and the exquisite John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman.
Join vocalist Edwin G. Hamilton with the Ed Fuqua Quartet for an exploration of the gentle side of this jazz giant on the 95th anniversary of his birth, Friday, September 24th at the UU Church of Augusta.
