Description

We will use traditional basketry techniques using modern materials, making this a fun and easy-to-learn project. Most California Indians did not make pottery, but instead used baskets for everything, including food gathering, storage, and cooking, as well as for making cradleboards, hats, and even shoes. Southern California baskets were made of materials from the environment, especially deer grass, juncus, yucca, and sumac. Today it can be hard to find native plants in urban areas to make traditional baskets. Using yarn to make a traditional coiled basket is a colorful and environmentally sustainable solution to this problem.
