Health Officials Warn Of Algal Bloom At Westford Pond

WESTFORD, MA — Health officials are advising residents to avoid contact with Long Sought-for Pond in Westford due to a possible algal bloom. The advisory comes after an inspection of the pond on Friday that led to the discovery of a mild blue-green tinge to the water and visible scum present in some areas. It will remain in place until further notice. Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. Under certain conditions, they can multiply quickly and create a cyanobacteria harmful algal bloom (cyanoHAB). From 2007 to 2011, cyanoHAB's were reported to have caused 183 cases of human illness and 38 dog fatalities. In Massachusetts, algal blooms usually occur in summer and early fall. Contact with the water can cause skin irritation, stomach aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. Rarer symptoms can include dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage. Small children and pets are most susceptible to the toxins. Anyone who comes into contact with the water and shows symptoms should seek medical attention. Pets who are showing symptoms of blue-green algae poisoning should be taken to a vet immediately.
