Press release from Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach: 07/22/2021 4:12 PM Summer Reading is almost over (sad face!), and the library staff has been reading right along with you. We're here to share our recent favorites - maybe you'll find your next summer or fall read! Emily's Pick: Quince by Sebastian Kadlecik, Kit Steinkellner and Emma Steinkellner Lupe is an average teenage girl whose life is about to change when she suddenly gets superpowers at her quinceanera. Now she must navigate the stress of being a teenager along with saving the world and keeping her secret at the same time. This all-ages comic series was just featured as one of hoopla digital's graphic novel book club picks and for a good reason. It's a hilarious, charming, and heart-warming read, no matter how old you are. Sarah's Pick: One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston Jane is a woman out of time -- literally. She has been trapped on the Q train since the late 1970s. When August finds out that the cute girl she has been flirting with on the subway not only dresses like she's from the 1970s but actually is from the 1970s, she works hard to solve the mystery of how and why Jane became stuck. In the meantime, August and Jane can't help growing closer as Jane slowly recovers her memories with August's assistance. A fun and touching romantic comedy, One Last Stop was a delight to read. Tara's Pick: The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth Twin sisters, raised by a questionable single mother who overdosed when they were 12, share a tight bond. Tight enough that the sister with autism decides to have a baby for her sister who is infertile. But having a baby changes everything, and in this domestic thriller, it reveals the long-hidden truth. I find it amazing what people are capable of doing to others, and what people can recover from. Lisa's Pick: The Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian This suspenseful historical novel is about a young Puritan girl who is accused of being a witch. It's the latest book by the author of The Flight Attendant. Leah's Pick: The Last Flight by Julie Clark I read this on cloudLibrary on a road trip and liked it so much that I had my daughter read it, too! It has a really interesting premise about two strangers who trade identities. It's suspenseful and addicting and has some #MeToo elements as well. Faith's Pick: The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang This is a wonderful rom-com with a lot of emotional pull, and it kick-started my dive back into romance when it was released back in 2018. It also features an autistic protagonist written by an autistic author, and it does a fantastic job of portraying autism. Kathy's Pick: The Doll in the Hall and Other Stories by Max Brallier The author of The Last Kids on Earth writes his own version of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark for the early readers set. Simple, spooky stories for the young reader in your life. Sandra's Pick: The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles Based on the true World War II story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris, this book is about the importance of books, the power of literature, and the value of libraries. It was a good read! Kimi's Pick: The Number 73304-23-4153-6-96-8 by Thomas Ott Graphic novels are fun because the images are just as integral to the story as the words, but this story is told without using any words at all. If you like silent films or spooky stories, this is the book for you. Ionnie's Pick: Once Ghosted, Twice Shy by Alyssa Cole Set in NYC, two women of different backgrounds run into each other by chance after a mysterious split just eight months prior. The story starts in the middle and alternates between the past and the present, giving us a non-linear experience that is both captivating and alluring. You can never really tell your heart what to do… not for long, anyway. As you walk with them through the feelings of falling in love and the emotions of guarding your heart, you will wonder, "will these women choose the road of vulnerability and transparency or convince themselves not to travel the same road twice?"
