2-Alarm Fire Rips Through Somerville Home

SOMERVILLE, MA — A two-alarm fire broke out at a home in Somerville overnight. The fire was reported at a two-family home on Autumn Street around 11:35 p.m. Wednesday, Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen said. Firefighters arrived to "heavy" fire on the second and third floors, which had spread into the attic and through the roof, Breen said. Crews pulled walls and ceilings open and put ventilation holes in the roof to bring the fire under control. Firefighters from Everett and Cambridge assisted at the scene. Both apartments were occupied at the time of the fire. Six adults, one child, a dog and a cat all escaped safely, but are now displaced, Breen said. Members of the Red Cross and Somerville Health & Human Services are helping the displaced residents. There were initially reports of someone trapped on the second floor, but several searches by firefighters confirmed no one else was inside, Breen said. The fire caused "extensive" fire and smoke damage to the second and third floors, in addition to heavy water and smoke damage to the first floor. The building is uninhabitable, Breen said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
