Newton Community Pride Launches 'Artful Piano Project'

NEWTON, MA — Newton Community Pride, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to build community through arts and culture programming, beautification projects, and local volunteer work, has launched the Artful Piano Project as part of an effort to bring art and music to the city's village centers. As part of the Artful Piano Project, nine pianos painted by local artists were delivered to various locations in Newton on Tuesday. The two baby grand and seven upright pianos were painted over the last six weeks and artists were free to paint whatever they wished. "We love the Artful Piano Project and [are] delighted to bring both public art and music to our village centers for spontaneous playing and singing this summer for all to enjoy," said Gloria Gavris, Board Chair of Newton Community Pride, in a statement. "It was so wonderful to see the camaraderie between the professional artists and student artists participating side by side for several weeks creating their unique themes on their pianos," she added. Participating artists include children's book illustrator Adam Proia and his son Julien, Newton North rising senior Sage Widder, Marin Murakoshi and her son Shoun, and Newton Art Association members Cynthia Cole and Myra Abelson. The Artful Piano Project will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Mayor Ruthanne Fuller on Tuesday, July 27 at 5 p.m. at Farlow Park in Newton Corner.
