NEW YORK CITY — Gracie Mansion could be a lot emptier if Eric Adams becomes New York City's next mayor.
Adams, the Democratic mayoral nominee, left his future residency up in the air during a Monday appearance on WNYC's "Brian Lehrer Show."
"I love Brooklyn, so it may be a combination of Gracie Mansion and my place in Brooklyn, in Bedford-Stuyvesant," he told Lehrer.
Gracie Mansion has long been the traditional residence for the city's mayors, but not every New Yorker dubbed "Hizzoner" spent their time there.
Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani famously, or infamously, left Gracie Mansion to live with a friend after his then-wife forbade his mistress and eventual next-ex-wife from the residence, as recounted in a Gothamist report.
Billionaire former Mayor Michael Bloomberg chose to forgo living at Gracie Mansion altogether.
De Blasio, despite his well-known and mocked penchant for daily trips to Park Slope, decided to live at Gracie Mansion full-time during his two terms as mayor.
Where exactly Adams lives became a controversial topic during the Democratic primary.
Adams, who serves as Brooklyn Borough President, made it known he slept in his office during the coronavirus pandemic. And he opened the doors of what he said was his Bed-Stuy home to reporters after a Politico story raised questions about his "mysterious whereabouts."
Lehrer on Monday closeda wide-ranging interview with Adams — which covered a gun violence bill proposed by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, affordable housing, ranked-choice voting and policing in the city — about his plans to live, or not, in Gracie Mansion. Adams said he'd make a final decision after the November election, assuming he beats Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
