Description

AA Tutoring is organizing a workshop for rising 6th-9th grade students who want to excel in math competitions, specifically AMC 8, AMC 10, MathCounts, and IMLEM. This workshop also serves as a building block for high school math competitions and for high school math classes. Our workshop will be taught from personal experience using problem-solving skills that we have accumulated over the years. As students who have experienced and excelled in math competitions ourselves, we can provide exclusive insight that will help young Mathletes develop new problem-solving skills to prepare for middle school math competitions and provide a foundation for high school math. We will be using and recommending resources that we have personally found helpful in our own experiences in addition to an original in-depth 4-day curriculum. We will go through each of the four main topics, common styles of problems that will appear in math contests and give a brief overview of each competition. Those who consistently score a 35+ on MathCounts Chapter, 20+ on AMC 8, or 108+ AMC 10 are NOT recommended for this course. Rather, this course is designed as an introduction to these competitions. The workshop will also offer office hours after each class to help provide individualized support. The tentative time for sessions is 4:00 - 5:00 pm EST, the office hours time is 8:00 pm-9:00 pm EST although it can be adjusted depending on popular needs. There are four main subject areas covered in math competitions: Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory. Each session will focus on one of these subject areas. The goal of this course is to review and introduce major concepts in each category and provide practice problems for discussion. For a detailed syllabus, please contact [email protected] The dates of the sessions are as follows: Algebra: 8/9Number Theory: 8/10Counting and Probability: 8/11Geometry: 8/12 Office hours will be held for further questions and help with homework. Students can also attend office hours to work on problems from lectures together. All sessions will be held on Zoom. Students have the option of registering for individual sessions or all four, although taking all four is highly recommended. The cost for each session is $15, and all proceeds will be donated directly to charity. However, as we believe education should be made available to everyone, please let us know if you have any financial difficulties and the fee will be waived.
