NEW YORK CITY — Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been handed over to California law enforcement officials for extradition back to the West Coast after serving the start of a 23-year prison term in New York, according to a published report. The New York Daily News reported that Weinstein — who was sentenced to nearly two decades in prison after being convicted of third-degree rape last year — was turned over to California officials at 9:25 a.m. Tuesday morning. Weinstein faces more sexual assault charges in California and was turned over for extradition by the New York Department of Corrections, the newspaper reported. Weinstein, 69, was convicted of rape and sexual assault in February 2020 after five women in Beverly Hills and New York accused the former producer of sexually assaulting them. Weinstein received nearly the maximum sentence for his crimes after facing anywhere from 5-25 years. A Manhattan jury found Weinstein guilty Feb. 24 of raping an actress in a Midtown hotel in 2013 and sexually assaulting a former production assistant at his Manhattan apartment in 2006, prosecutors said. The jury did not find Weinstein guilty of the highest charge, predatory sexual assault, which hinged in part on the testimony of "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra, who accused Weinstein of attacking her in 1993 or 1994. Following his conviction, Weinstein was briefly hospitalized at Bellevue over heart health concerns, then was moved to an infirmary on Rikers Island. The Daily News reported Tuesday that Weinstein's attorneys attempted to get his extradition delayed because of the Hollywood mogul's health, but the request was denied. The newspaper obtained paperwork earlier this month that indicated that lawyers for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and District Attorney's Office indicated that Weinstein won't suffer any disruptions in his medical care after being extradited to the West Coast.
