STAMFORD, CT — A 17-year-old Stamford resident was charged with having a loaded gun after police said they found the weapon underneath the driver's seat of the car he was in. Capt. Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department said members of the Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad set-up surveillance in the area of West Main Street and Rose Park Avenue on Tuesday night, following complaints from nearby residents about drug dealings and assaults in the area. While officers were setting up surveillance around 9:15 p.m., they noticed a black 2016 BMW occupied by three people come through the area several times, Conklin said, and a license plate check for the car showed that it was unregistered. Officers pulled the car over and found a 17-year-old at the wheel with two 19-year-old passengers, Conklin said. "Officers told the driver the plate didn't come back to the car. He told them he did not have a licence, nor was the car registered or insured," Conklin said. Upon telling the driver that the car would have to be searched and towed, Conklin said the driver admitted that he had a loaded handgun underneath his seat. Officers found a Taurus .22 caliber revolver, loaded with six live rounds, with one of the rounds spent, Conklin said. The 17-year-old was charged with possession of a pistol without a permit, and having a weapon in a car, according to Conklin. He was also charged with the misuse of license plates, operating an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a license and insurance. Conklin said the teen was turned over to the department's Youth Bureau, where he was remanded to custody on Tuesday night. "There was good, proactive work by our narcotics and organized crime squads to respond to community complaints at this location which resulted in a very nice arrest," Conklin said. Conklin added that the 19-year-olds were not charged.
