EAST HARLEM, NY — A 34-year-old man was killed early Monday when he crashed his car while making a speedy exit from the Harlem River Drive, according to police.
The crash happened around 1:41 a.m. Monday when Joseph Edlawn, a resident of Hackensack, N.J., was driving his 2021 Honda Accord north on the Harlem River Drive.
While driving at "a high rate of speed," Edlawn tried to take the East 125th Street exit and continued down the exit ramp. There, his car hit the curb, causing it to flip.
The car rolled over multiple times, eventually landing on its roof in the northbound ramp from Second Avenue onto the Harlem River Drive.
Edlawn, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car through the moon roof. A 28-year-old woman sitting in the front seat, who did have her seatbelt on, was not seriously injured and was hospitalized in stable condition.
First responders found Edlawn unconscious and unresponsive with trauma across his body. He was rushed to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash is still under investigation by the NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad.
