Description

CORNWALL, CT — The covered bridge on Route 128 in Cornwall, one of the last covered bridges in the state, was damaged Tuesday when an excavator towed by a pickup truck hit the top of the structure, according to state police. See the Facebook post below. "The excavators boom struck the top of the bridge, causing significant non-structural damage to the bridge," state police wrote. "The Connecticut Department of Transportation was contacted and performed a safety inspection, insuring the damage did not impact the safety/integrity of the bridge." The one-lane bridge has a vehicle clearance height of 10 feet, 11 inches, and the road was temporarily closed following the crash as crews removed the damaged wood and debris from the roof of the bridge and roadway. Officials said the road should be reopened later on Tuesday. "Troop B reminds all motorist to follow all signage placed on the roadway to include vehicle height signs, especially before bridges!" said state police officials.
