Description

MILFORD, CT — A grassroots effort is underway to reforest Charles Island after years of deterioration from storms, deer, birds and disease. Charles Island Reforestation LLC is spearheading fundraising efforts to acquire and plant trees that are resistant to the armillaria fungal disease that had nearly wiped out the bird sanctuary's trees a few years ago. Charles Island, a 14-acre wooded island off the coast of Milford near Silver Sands State Park, was designated both a Natural Area Preserve in 1999 and a Long Island Sound Stewardship Site in 2006 by DEEP due to its significant wildlife and coastal resources. It also has been designated an Important Bird Area by Audubon Connecticut. The island is a particularly sensitive and important ecological area that serves as one of the few remaining breeding colonies of herons and egrets in Connecticut. The cost for each new tree is approximately $50, according to a flyer from the company. Residents may make a donation by Venmo @CharlesIsland-Reforestation or by PayPal at [email protected]. Checks made out to Charles Island Restoration LLC may be mailed to Charles Island Restoration c/o Dolores Hannon, 110 Beach Avenue, Milford, CT, 06460
