'Ride Free' Staying For People Over 65 On MOCO Buses Longterm

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD — People over 65 and people with disabilities will continue to ride Montgomery County bus for free even if bus fares return, the Department of Transportation Announced. County buses have been free for all during the pandemic. "I am pleased that we can extend the benefit of free fare to our seniors and disabled community long term," said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin in an announcement. "These groups have been especially susceptible to isolation throughout the pandemic. Now that things are reopening, the cost of transit should not be prohibiting these community members from accessing transportation." To get a free ride, show one of the following (don't tap the firebox): A Senior SmarTrip cardA Reduced Fare SmarTrip photo ID cardA Medicare card with a current photo IDA MetroAccess card This applies to the following Metro bus routes as well: C2, C4, C8, F4, J1, J2, K6, K9*, L8, Q1, Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6, T2, Y2, Y7, Y8, Z2, Z6, Z7, Z8. Metro buses are collecting fares for all other passengers. "For many in our senior and disability community, mobility can pose compounded challenges," said County Executive Marc Elrich in the announcement. "I remain committed to supporting an inclusive approach to ensure equity for all of our residents. Montgomery County is leading the regional transit response by making transit more accessible for those who need it most."
