TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River Regional Board of Education has approved a new interim superintendent to lead the school district while it goes back to square one on its superintendent search.
Stephen Genco, who retired June 30, 2020, as superintendent in the Jackson Township Schools, will lead the school district starting Aug. 1 with a contract through June 30, 2022.
Genco is a Brick Township High School alum and received his college degrees from West Virginia University, Georgian Court and Rowan University. He started his career as a chemistry and physics teacher and later was an administrator in the Point Pleasant and Wall Township school districts before becoming an assistant superintendent in Jackson from 2008 to 2011, TapInto reported. He left Jackson to become superintendent in South Plainfield, where he worked from 2011 to 2014 before returning to Jackson.
Genco will be paid $800 per day and the contract runs through June 30, 2022, unless the board hires a permanent superintendent sooner. He will not receive health benefits and will receive one day vacation per month during his employment. The days expire if not used before his contract ends.
