CHARITY: What does it mean? Who deserves it? And how much are we morally obligated to give? Most of us engage in some form of charity, either through donations or volunteering. But do we really understand the nature and purpose of giving? I'd like to use this seminar to examine the topic of charity, and to prompt us all to ask some though questions: Affluence: Are we giving as much as we should?Effectiveness: Are we giving to the right organizations?Morality: Are we giving for the right reasons? (And do our motivations really matter?)We'll begin the seminar with a short video featuring the philosopher Peter Singer, who offers a rather unsettling moral thought experiment that calls into question our "normal" standards of giving. Then we'll split up into small groups for guided discussion, and wrap up with a group-wide sharing of our realizations and takeaways.
