SUMMIT, NJ — In the month of June, the Summit Fire Department responded to a total of 230 incidents. The following are highlights released by the department: Fire Next Door June 8, 8:08 p.m.: Units responded to provide aid to Millburn for a confirmed structure fire at an Ocean Street residence. On arrival, personnel were assigned tasks for command, extinguishment, search, salvage and overhaul. The structure was a two-family home with heavy fire found in the rear attic. Units remained on scene until released by command. Missing Child June 12, 10:47 p.m.: Units responded to assist police with searching for a missing child in the area of Park Avenue. Fire units were assigned areas to cover, and Summit EMS joined in the search. The child was located in an adjoining town and all units returned. Accident With Fluid Spill June 14, 1:48 a.m.: Units responded to a motor vehicle accident with possible injuries on Route 24. On arrival, the Fire Department found a single car accident with the driver talking to the New Jersey State Police Department. The FD applied absorbent to a fluid spill and began to check the driver for injuries. Summit EMS arrived and took over patient care. Trapped In The Elevator June 19, 12:11 p.m.: Units responded to a Springfield Avenue address on a report of a person trapped in an elevator. On arrival, command was established and the Fire Department investigated. The elevator car was stalled between the first and basement floors. Power was secured to the elevator and the FD was able to gain entry to the elevator car and remove the occupants. The elevator car was placed out of service and notification was made to the elevator company. Oven Fire Causes Smoky Scene June 21, 8:05 p.m.: Summit units responded for a reported oven fire at a Morris Avenue address. Millburn and Springfield fire departments responded as automatic aid. On arrival, light smoke was showing from the front and rear of a middle apartment in a building set back from the street. Members conducted a primary search and found a fire contained to the oven range and moderate smoke throughout the apartment. A dry chemical extinguisher was used to extinguish the fire. No extension was found outside of the range. Millburn was assigned to do a primary search of the second floor and both adjoining exposure units. Springfield was assigned as a rapid intervention crew and set up at the front of the apartment. Crews forced entry to the adjacent unit to check for exposure and found none. The fire was declared under control at 8:25 p.m. The range was removed from the apartment and gas was secured at the valve. The unit was ventilated. Members installed a new smoke detector and terminated command. Butts Not Out June 24, 1:14 p.m.: Units responded to a reported outdoor trash fire at a Prospect Street address. The department extinguished the fire and found discarded cigarettes in and around the trash receptacle. The facility staff were advised on how to prevent another fire and how to recharge the used extinguisher. Brush With Fire June 30, 3:19 p.m.: Police responded to a brush fire along Route 78. Springfield and Millburn fire departments assisted. Fire personnel stretched hose lines and extinguished the brush fire. The New Jersey State Police were also on the scene.
