ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Annapolis City Council on July 12 unanimously voted to urge Maryland's congressional delegation to support Medicare for All. The council's declaration officially supports the federal Medicare for All Act of 2021 (HR 1976, 117th Congress) and the creation of a Maryland Commission on Universal Health Care. Alderman Rob Savidge (Ward 7) sponsored the resolution. Alderwomen Rhonda Pindell Charles (Ward 3) and Sheila Finlayson (Ward 4) co-sponsored the motion. "Healthcare is a basic human right, and this is also common sense for our City," Savidge said in a Tuesday press release. "Medicare for All would reduce City healthcare expenditures and enable local governments across our state to reinvest this money back into the community." The council's resolution explained that the Medicare for All Act: would provide coverage without copays, deductibles or other out-of-pocket costs… and would provide national health insurance for every person in the United States for all necessary medical care including prescription drugs; hospital, surgical and outpatient services; primary and preventive care; emergency services; reproductive care; dental and vision care; and long-term care.
