ACROSS COLORADO — If you're among the millions of Americans traveling this summer, you may be in for some sticker shock at the gas pump. Gas prices reached a seven-year high this summer, according to a recent AAA report. As of Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of gas in the United States was $3.16. Last year, gas prices hovered around $2.18 per gallon in July. Looking to save money in Colorado? If you're heading into the mountains, make sure to fill up beforehand. And if you're on a road trip in the plains, fill up before you hit the metro areas. Here's a look at the Colorado counties with the highest and lowest average gas prices. Highest gas prices, as of Tuesday. Pitkin: $4.69.Hinsdale: $4.03.San Miguel: $4.05.Summit: $3.87.Ouray: $3.83. Lowest gas prices. Prowers: $2.92.Kiowa: $2.97.Cheyenne: $2.98.Sedgwick: $3.18.Logan: $3.20. Meanwhile, Southern states including Texas, Alabama, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Missouri enjoy the nation's lowest gas prices, ranging from $2.72 to $2.87 per gallon.
