The 'Bloom' Sculpture Series Grows Towards The Hill Country In City Of San Antonio

Press release from the City of San Antonio: July 14, 2021 SAN ANTONIO – Inspired by native wildflowers, three new "Bloom" sculptures can now be found in Dwight D. Eisenhower Park. Located near a new trailhead close to the Northwest Military entrance of the park, the latest installment in the series by San Antonio Artist Leticia Huerta resembles a red Cedar Sage, a yellow Four Nerve Daisy, and a sunny green Antelope Horn Milkweed with accents of fuchsia and silver. These radiant, oversized metal flowers are part of a series created from elements that, up close, resemble larger-than-life bicycle parts. The artwork takes inspiration from trail users and the nearby blossoms. "Eisenhower Park already has outstanding examples of hill country landscaping and miles of paved and unpaved trails for enjoying the outdoors," said District 8 City Councilman Manny Pelaez. "This colorful public art addition is not only about aesthetics and inspiration, but also part of a larger strategy that connects over 69 miles of San Antonio trails together. It is symbolic of how public art can bring us together." This is the third "Bloom" installation, with the original installation at Mud Creek in McAllister Park and second downtown on river level at the River Walk Public Art Garden near the corner of Alamo and Market Streets. The series is a collaborative effort between the City of San Antonio's Department of Arts & Culture and Parks & Recreation Department to enhance local parks and greenways with public art, and when completed in Fall 2022, there will be a total of seven San Antonio parks in which you can see a total of 17 "Bloom" flowers. "The 'Bloom' series highlights the many ways public art improves our community including increasing neighborhood connectivity, creating visual identities to our park trailheads and greenways, representing unique elements that make San Antonio a great city, and providing opportunities for San Antonio based creatives," said Department of Arts & Culture Director Debbie Racca-Sittre. "The installation at Eisenhower Park gets us one step closer to a full bouquet of vibrant public art that residents and visitors will enjoy for years to come."
