NEWARK, NJ — A coalition of groups are planning to hold a march in Newark to demand "Medicare For All" as part of a nationwide day of action on Saturday. Events are being planned in more than 50 cities under the nationwide Medicare for All banner. Learn more and see a list of locations here. In Newark, the local rally is being planned by a coalition of groups, including North New Jersey DSA (Medicare For All Working Group), People's Organization For Progress (POP), NJ State Industrial Union Council, and NJ Movement For A People's Party. Representatives from Green Party NJ and Our Revolution NJ will also be in attendance. Marchers will be congregating at 11 a.m. at the south end of Military Park in Newark, 51 Park Place, by the intersection of Broad and Raymond. According to a statement from organizers, protesters will be demanding implementation of a federal system which provides "comprehensive health care to every person, free of discrimination according to any characteristic or capacity." Organizers added: "As we continue fighting the worst public health crisis in a century, we also continue suffering due to an exploitative, lethal, inhumane health care industry. A universal, single-payer system will save untold lives every year, as well as trillions of dollars. It will instantly address the most common cause of bankruptcy in America: medical debt. It will guarantee care and dignity to all, ushering the Unites States into a community the rest of the world's nations formed many decades ago." "We are marching for Medicare for all because millions of people in this country who do not have health insurance can't afford to see a doctor or a dentist," said former U.S. Senate candidate and POP chair Lawrence Hamm. "For many who do the premiums, co-pays, deductibles, and out of pocket expenses are too high," Hamm said. "We are marching because we want to see a national system of free universal health care established in this country so everyone can have the medical care and medicines they need." "We believe expanding the Medicare system to cover everyone is the best way to achieve this," he added.
