MORRIS TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man will serve 110 months for an armed-robbery spree that ended with a crash in Morris Township. Meshach Whagar previously pleaded guilty to the 2017 robberies that occurred across seven New Jersey counties.
Whagar's codefendant, Tione Davis, previously pleaded guilty to federal charges relating to the armed robbery and is awaiting sentencing.
Davis and Whagar committed a string of 20 armed robberies between November and December 2017 at gas stations and convenience stores, according to the Department of Justice. During these robberies, Davis — wearing dark clothing and hiding his face with masks and scarves — brandished a handgun and demanded money from store clerks, according to authorities. After stealing the cash, Davis fled with Whagar, who acted as a getaway driver, the DOJ said.
The robberies took place throughout Essex, Middlesex, Morris, Bergen, Union, Hudson and Passaic Counties.
Before their arrests, they led law enforcement in a high-speed chase in Morris County. The pursuit continued until the driver lost control and hit a telephone pole on Hanover Avenue.
Davis and Whagar fled on foot but were found in a Morris Township garage shortly after, authorities said. Law enforcement found two handguns matching the description of those Davis used during robberies, authorities said.
