Cops Tase, Arrest Stabbing Suspect At Santa Monica Beach

SANTA MONICA, CA — Officers used a taser to stop a man accused of stabbing another man at the beach, then waving a sharp object at other people, the Santa Monica Police Department said this week. The incident happened about 6:35 p.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of the beach, police said. The victim told officers he was stabbed in the back with an unknown object, police said. He described the suspect and where he went after the attack. Other witnesses flagged down the officers. They said that the suspect was waving a sharp object and making a slashing motion. Officers later found the suspect, who they described as a transient, disobeyed the officer's commands and ran away from them. The officers used a taser on the suspect. Timothy James Smith, 32, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting, obstructing and delaying arrest. Officers say they found a metal-hinged compass after a search of Smith, police said. He was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained during the fall. No condition was immediately available.
