Press release from the South Bend Community School Corporation: 07/22/2021 Event seeks to bring together leaders, community members, and educators to provide foundational skills for restorative justice Event seeks to bring together leaders, community members, and educators to provide foundational skills for restorative justice The South Bend Community School Corporation will explore the foundations of Restorative Justice dialogue as the entire district engages in conversation about history, race, justice, and language as a critical next step for envisioning new pathways to inclusion during Restorative Justice Foundations Day training on Monday, July 26, 2021, at Clay High School, 19131 Darden Road, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, provides an overview training on the Restorative Justice (RJE) circle process as it relates to Maisha Winn's book Justice on Both Sides: Transforming Education Through Restorative Justice. Participants will take part in breakout sessions with restorative justice practitioners. These sessions will provide time to interact and reflect on personal stances while hearing stories of the positive impact RJE is having on school communities. The event is designed to offer support to all staff for working alongside students, peers, and community members while providing restorative justice methods. "This is an ideal time for us to bring our community together to learn about and experience restorative justice circles to discuss the transformative power of community to create change,'' said Kathe Streeter, restorative justice coordinator for the South Bend Community School Corporation. "With some of the most outstanding leaders in the field, this event provides a hands-on opportunity to learn from those experts who themselves built the foundation for community engagement through what we know is a most effective way to bring about healing, understanding, and overcoming bias and injustice." Guest speakers include Nancy Riestenberg, author of Circle in the Square: building community and repairing harm in school and Becky McCammon, author of Restorative Practices at School.
