WHEATON, IL — An application to convert a Mariano's employee parking lot into a gas station has been withdrawn, Wheaton city officials said in an announcement Tuesday. The news comes just a week after dozens of residents spoke out against the project at a public hearing of the city's planning and zoning board.
Roundy's Supermarkets, Inc., the parent company of Mariano's, had proposed to build a gas station near 600 S. Main St. As of Tuesday, more than 2,200 residents had signed a petition opposing the Mariano's gas station.

At the zoning meeting, residents who live near the site of the proposed gas station expressed concerns about traffic, noise and light pollution and pedestrian safety.
Kate Reinhart, who started the petition and lives near Mariano's, said at the hearing, "This is the gateway to our community and to put a gas station there would just be an abomination."
In a news release Tuesday, city officials wrote that they were sharing the update "because of the significant amount of community feedback" at the public hearing.
